In order for a foreign nurse to practice as a registered nurse or midwife in Ireland it is mandatory that they need to be registered with An Bord Altranais. Because a foreign nurse registration with An Bord Altranais assures the public, employers, and their colleagues that the foreign nurse is accountable to the Board for complying and maintaining the competencies and standards of the nursing profession. In order for a foreign nurse to obtain registration with An Bord Altranais, the foreign nurse must arrange to have the Verification of Registration and Good Standing Document (Form C) sent directly from the relevant registration authorities to An Bord Altranais. Below are the necessary documents needed by the foreign nurse to be submitted directly from relevant registration authorities to An Bord Altranais.

  1. A completed application form detailing the foreign nurse experience from graduation up to the present.
  2. Details of the Educational Institute where the foreign nurse finished nursing education or training.
  3. Details of the foreign nurse current Registration with the relevant Nursing/Midwifery Registration Authorities.
  4. The foreign nurse birth certificate, photograph and appropriate application fee.

As a foreign nurse applicant trained in a non European Union country, their competence in the English language must meet the level where the foreign nurse can communicate effectively and practice nursing safely and effectively in Ireland. That’s why the An Bord Altranais requires the foreign nurse applicant to submit proof of English Language competence. And in order for a foreign nurse to be granted direct registration their training programme must meet with the educational requirements and standards of Irish trained nurses.
