To practise nursing or midwifery in Singapore, a nurse or midwife must be registered with the Singapore Nursing Board and possess a valid practicing certificate. The Singapore Nursing Board or SNB is the regulatory authority for nurses and midwives in Singapore. Its extent and functions are defined in the Singapore Nursing and Midwives Act for the purpose of registration and enrolment of nurses, the registration of midwives and the certification of Advanced Practice Nurses and related matters.
An applicant who wishes to apply for Singapore nursing registration is required to have successfully completed one of the following accredited pre registration Singapore nursing courses.
- Diploma in Singapore nursing
- Diploma in Health Sciences
- Nitec in nursing
An applicant for Singapore nursing registration who completed a nursing course outside Singapore will have to satisfy the Singapore Nursing Board that the course they completed is equivalent to an accredited Singapore nursing course. The Singapore nursing registration applicant may also be required to take an examination, submit themselves to a competency evaluation and placed on provisional registration or enrollment. A temporary registration or enrolment shall not exceed 2 years and may be renewed for periods not exceeding 12 months at a time. The temporary Singapore nursing registration or enrollment will allow an individual to:
- teach, undertake research or study in Singapore
- undergo training under a training scheme approved by the Board
- provide voluntary nursing or midwifery service under a volunteer nursing scheme or volunteer midwifery scheme approved by the Board
All applications shall be made on a prescribed form and submitted together with the following documents.
- Letter of employment if applicant is trained outside Singapore.
- Certified true copy of NRIC, birth certificate, passport or marriage certificate where applicable. Registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Midwife or enrolment as an Enrolled Nurse. Training certificate. Transcript of Nursing Education (with the breakdown in theory and record of clinical experience in hours). Work testimonials.
- Verification of registration/enrolment to be sent directly from Registration/Licensing authority to Registrar, Singapore Nursing Board, 16 College Road, #01-01, College of Medicine Building, Singapore 169854.
- Transcript of nursing education to be sent directly from the training institution to Registrar, Singapore Nursing Board, 16 College Road, #01-01, College of Medicine Building, Singapore 169854.
- Any document that is not in English shall be accompanied by a certified translation in English.
